Does Jesus Expect Me to Like That Person?

by Paul on 12 June 2010

1 John 4:7-21

As always, God’s definition about something is very different to that of the world.

“Love is not about feelings, it’s a choice the requires action”

And Christian love is defined as:

  • God’s love for us;

  • Our love for God; and

  • Our love for others.

Here’s my issue. Is there a difference between loving somebody and liking them?

You see, there’s lots of people who I don’t particularly like. They have habits that bug me. They seem pompous or arrogant. (Actually, that’s probably how they see me). I really don’t choose to spend time with them.

What would Jesus have me do in this situation?

Let me know what you think I should do.

Hi Paul, I really love my children to bits but sometimes I don’t like the things they do. God does call us to love (agape) but that doesn’t necessarily mean we have to like them. There are some people who are simply placed before us to sharpen us, to refine us and to test us. To make us better people. Proverbs 27:17 “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
