Title: Full of the Holy Spirit
Speaker: Paul Gardner
Passage: Acts 6:8-8:1
Stephen, a man full of the Holy Spirit was “set up” by the religious hierarchy on false charges.
After speaking in his own defense, (well, actually he used the opportunity to speak truth into the lives of those falsely accusing him), he was stoned to death.
Today we often think of being filled with the Holy Spirit and this producing physical effects on us… but what does it look like to be filled with the Holy Spirit all the time.
This passage gives us some clues and they all relate to being filled with God’s love.
-
He gives me the right words at the right times
Being filled with God’s love, Stephen knew that his accusers needed to hear the truth of Christ Jesus if they were going to be saved.
God’s Holy Spirit gave him the words that cut them to their hearts.
When they heard these things they were cut to the heart… Acts 7:54 NKJVSometimes, (often?), the Holy Spirit will tell us to be quiet and listen also!
-
He gives me peace in times of adversity
Even though Stephen knew he was about to die he was at peace (shalom) with God. The Holy Spirit show him in a vision that Jesus was standing at the right hand of God giving true witness to the only one who matters. Stephen was fully aware of God’s love for him.
Note that a Biblical peace is not a mere lack of hostilities. It is about being reconciled to God.
-
He prompts me to pray for those who speak and act against me
Even as they stoned him Stephen is filled with God’s love for his persecutors, praying
Lord, do not hold this sin against them. Acts 7:60A sidebar to this is the fact that Saul (later St Paul) held the coats of those who killed Stephen and gave approval to his death. I wonder if this prayer was answered on the road to Damascus?
-
Do you recognise this fullness of the Holy Spirit in your life?
-
Do you spend time in the Word and in prayer to enable this fullness to happen?
-
Do others see this in you?
